Blog Post #8: We Belong!

Years ago our family of 6 visited the zoo.  When we went to pay to get in we realized that a membership which lasted the whole year was cheaper than paying individually.  So, we purchased the membership.  When the membership card was being handed to me, suddenly a small skinny arm reached in and grabbed it before I could.  It was my son.  He started running in circles, waving the card in the air, jumping and shouting, “I belong!  I belong!”

In the Gospel of Luke chapters 17 & 18 Jesus teaches about the Kingdom of God.  The Kingdom is where Christ dwells and we all can to.  In Luke 17:21, Jesus speaks to the Pharisees and explains that they are not to continually be looking for the Kingdom but should understand that the Kingdom is within them if they believe in Him.  The Kingdom of God is open for all to belong to and to carry within them.  You don’t have to pay or enter in with a membership card. To receive Christ the King is to receive His great love, rule and reign and with that is the assurance of your home with Him forever here on Earth and in Heaven.  We all can belong.

In Luke 18:15-17 (NIV) Jesus blesses the little children. “15 People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”

There was a time in my life when I was flailing.  My journey was riddled with poor decisions, suffering alone, and feeling more and more detached from God and people that I thought I used to belong to.  My isolation, sin, and false truths that I was choosing to believe drove wedges in relationships and put up walls so that I couldn’t see the truth about who I was.  I couldn’t grasp the fact that there was a God or even people out there that really loved and cared about me.  They wanted me to share life with them. Emptiness and loneliness were my companions.

Then I began to understand the truth from God’s word which set me free.  I understood how to belong to the Kingdom and I desired it greatly.  When I read scripture I saw that I was the child that Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for.  He welcomed me into the Kingdom and filled me with His great love. I finally understood that nothing could separate me from the love of Christ Jesus (Romans 8:37-29).  Then, like my son, I jumped up and down and shouted with great joy, “I belong!  I belong!” Won’t you join me? (Romans 2:7)

Grace & Peace,
